Alison M. Jones: Photo Gallery: Nyala Dairy

BEFORE 2001, Kenya’s mountainous Nyala region struggled with only ten small stands, one hardware store and some small dairy farms to generate income. Then two thousand farmers formed a cooperative and asked TechnoServe to help them build a cooling plant so as to avoid severe underpayment by middlemen. Now 10,000 family members directly benefit; indirectly, including workers hired and other businesses connected with the dairy’s success, the number doubles to 20,000. These photos show the local farmers bringing their fresh milk into this cooling plant. — Alison M. Jones
